Could it be... The TLJ make up department purposely did a bad job with Rose Tico?

 

In fact I don’t understand why are we discussing this issue here.
I haven’t seen anyone who has a problem with KMT as a person... here.
Here I see a lot of people sharing opinions about a movie.
And that it’s so different than going on Twitter to harass an actress for her ethnicity... that shoudn’t need be explained.

@cawatrooper I mostly agree. In fact I come here trying to discuss with people.
Sometimes sure I got a little bit mad too. I’m not perfect.
But I use this place even in my worst moments.
I’m not yelling at RJ or KK personally.
I am not trolling them on FB or Twitter.

I believe we are here, to articulate a discourse.

So yeah, once again, probably it’s time to even change name at this thread.

Ok... wait... what? I leave and come back and we're talking about people digitally harassing Tran? Why? This thread is about what you didn't like about the movie. it is not a platform to harass anyone, why are we even talking about this? I've only heard people say they don't like Rose, I haven't heard anyone say anything derogatory about Kelly - just the script and her activity in the story. Maybe I missed it.

@mecano Rian was her employee and she did oversee the movie and sign off on the script. But my point still remains is that this was all true for TFA, R1, and SOLO and those are likable movies so at worst, she's 3 out of 4. If she gets the blame for TLJ she also gets the credit for TFA, R1, and SOLO - that's fair right?

@Maximus Create a new thread, I'll come and post and contribute, so will others. Not going to withhold criticism when it's due or agree when I disagree but if you'd like to start a new place to talk with a topic, move forward with that. This post has a purpose and I don't think it needs to change.

 

I wouldn't get too wound up in regards to disliking the movie. It's not the first time trolls have chased a young woman off social media. It's not a new and is not an isolated incident. The exact same thing happened after TFA. This is not a backlash against TLJ. I think it's more to do with individuals who want star wars to go back in time and I wish I could transport them back and let them stay there. It feels like some people don't want to share. Star Wars is for everyone although ironically I didn't feel like that watching the movie especially in the third act.

I won't talk about Rose but Kelly? She's great and so sweet. I want to see her act outside of Star Wars. Give her something with a bit more meat to get her chops around and a better script. I know she will be fine she has a great career ahead of her. She's great.

We are in a quiet period when it comes to SW news and gossip. I think we're only a month or more likely 2 months away from getting some juicy information about new projects and what JJ is up to with episode 9.

The information is she is leaving.

Did they have any proof? That's a damning claim. Or is it just speculation and wishing she's fired?

 

It sounds like it's still just a rumor and if she does leave or get fired, it sounds like there are a multitude of things that will have caused it and not any one movie in particular. I suspect execs don't care that TLJ was divisive, but they do care that Solo bombed and that there seems to be a disconnect among the directors and herself.

If they couldn't make Solo work with a likable cast, a popular character and Ron Howard at the helm, how are they going to make Boba Fett work?

I don't think we are ever going to see a Rian Johnson trilogy. Quite honestly I don't think anything beyond E9 is written in stone as I think we are in for a major shake-up in the coming months.

OK, let's be clear: Your thread says: "Curious how many members of this forum contributed to harassing this woman." That is a statement which is clearly implying that some of us in here who are in the anti-TLJ camp are also going onto social media and saying vile things, and it is a thinly veiled attempt to associate the anti-TLJ people in here with those who harassed Tran on social media.

Oh, and can you please stop calling social mediots you disagree with "Nazis"? The Nazis tortured, enslaved and murdered millions and millions of innocent people in the most heinous ways imaginable. As you yourself have stated: "It's just a movie. Move on. Seek therapy."

I have a sneaky suspicion these rumors are not based on anything factual but rather from people reading the tea leaves - but that doesn't mean they are wrong. I have been discussing it for a couple months as a distinct possibility (it used to get me some degree of ridicule from certain corners but I notice there isn't so much ridicule anymore when I mention it). In just a few short years, Star Wars has gone from the crown jewel of cinema to just another cinematic universe struggling to make a profit with their most recent installment (and will probably fail to do so). The fan base is divided unlike ever before. While it started strong, it has been going straight downhill ever since.

Also worth noting is the fact that Disney did not select Kathleen Kennedy. She was part of the package they bought. Do not underestimate the importance of this. Oftentimes, managers and executives want their own hand-picked people working for them in these types of positions. As such, her leash may have been a bit shorter than maybe someone else's.

I hate the fact that Tran has been mistreated in any way. She is exactly what I want from a Star Wars actress: talented, fan-friendly and excited to be a part of the GFFA. It broke my heart that the character was so atrocious but I don't see her as deserving any of the blame for that.

 

Prior to SOLO bombing I would have disagreed. If EPIX struggles, then I'd be reasonably confident that Rian might step aside (or be asked to step aside) to let the story go forward without "wind drag". I still think there's going to be a trilogy but I don't think Daisy Ridley loved the SW experience that much either and wonder if she'd sign up to do another trilogy, so it's a question of is it a new story with new characters or the continuation of the introduction of new characters. Who knows at this point.

While I am not a KK fan, my concern is more about her making better SW movies than her being removed. Again I have to ask, what if who she is replaced by is worse? KK has been around forever and worked under GL, she is a SW person through and through. And while TLJ was a very bad choice (the worst I have ever seen from an Episodic movie) who are the candidates to head LFL that know the franchise like her? I don't know that the SW problems get better with a Disney hand selected exec heading LFL in place of KK. WE could get someone who is worse.

I guess I need more info on this because I don't know what's being talked about here. Tran was harassed or was being harassed? I can tell you Rian Johnson's Twitter mentions looked like 1000 finishing moves happening at the same time in Mortal Kombat when TLJ came out. Was it on par with that? I don't get why people are mad at Tran, what did she do? Did people harass Laura Dern because they didn't like Holdo? This doesn't make any sense to me. Folks didn't like Rose's character so... they're mad at Tran? Someone help me make this math make sense. What does the actor have to do with the script they're given? KMT didn't write it. Mark didn't write his part in TLJ, did folks blast him because of the script? What am I missing here? Why are people angry with KMT?

 

I'd rather read people's thoughts on TLJ, not on social media drama.

An actor getting harassed is always shitty, but I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed Mark Hamill said #getalifenerds. He's worked his entire life for nerd fandoms, and assholes being assholes on the internet is now our responsibility, and paints us in a bad light? I'm sorry, but nobody is responsible but the people saying the terrible things on her instagram. It should have been #getalifeassholes. But now the media is churning out article after article about how terrible SW fans are? Give me a break. It's no worse or better than other fandoms, or society in general. There will always be assholes, and all we can do it either ignore them if it's social media, or if you are a forum mod, ban them. Don't associate us with them, just because they are part of this fandom. You may as well try to blame video games for gun violence while you're at it. It's absurd.

 

I think going for a Solo movie from the get go wasn't the greatest idea. Heck, they couldn't even come up with a plot that revolved around him, as it felt like he was just a long for the ride.

Boba Fett would be awesome, but as a Netflix series.

I hope the Kathleen thing is just a rumor. I think its awesome that she has put an emphasis woman getting the shine, but was way too heavy handed. Like its cool having Rey as the lead, but then they made her perfect right off the bat, everyone loves her, and other characters take a fall to prop her up. Granted, I have no idea how much she pushed for things in the script, but all 4 of her movies have a common denominator.

Also signing on Rian for a full trilogy after The Last Jedi script brings up huge red flags. Like that movie is bad, really, REALLY, bad.

Sorry if I'm mostly off-topic. The critical threads are the only places I like to read/post as you get good discussion from both sides.

 

I took it as him addressing people that have nothing better going in their lives to care about than something so insanely trivial. To care so much about this make-believe thing they’d actual want to hurt a real person. It’s not a stab at the fandom, but the dregs that litter it and all others.
