THREAD FOR THOSE WHO HATED THE MOVIE

Another thing I found weird in this movie. The first thing Rey answered to Luke was a lie.

Strange way to start to be a jedi.

 

Which line specifically?

I'm also confused why Rey would call Luke Master Skywalker. She doesn't know him in that capacity, I don't know why she doesn't just call him Luke

 

Quite near the beginning when she is outside his hut and Luke is locked in.

 

It's an honorific, right? She's calling him by his title out of respect.

 

Yeah. It's like calling someone a Professor or a Doctor. She's not wrong, though.

 

To give an example of where I'm coming from, the Gracie Family is a well known family in BJJ and Mixed Martial Arts. I am confident that their students refer to them with some title, might even be master. However no one else would would refer to them as Master (even though they rightfully have earned such a title in their school).

A further example, I have friends who are college professors. They all have Doctorates in their fields and they're tenured. I don't refer to them as professor or Dr however. The capacity in which I know them is not a Student-Teacher dynamic.

Rey doesn't know Luke. She hasn't studied under him or any Jedi, she is not a part of the Jedi Order (as its no longer exists). To me, there was no reason for her to refer to him as Master Skywalker since she didn't know him in that capacity. Maybe the argument could be made that she was trying to get to know him in that capacity and that's why she used it? I don't know. It felt - forced to me.

ETA: Does she refer to Han as General? I mean that was his title once also, and how Finn introduced her to him - right?

 

I know this is the hate TLJ thread but are we really hating a character for being polite? I am honestly a bit confused right now.

 

When Padme greets Obi-Wan in AOTC, she calls him "Master Kenobi". He's not her master. He's just a master. She's being polite. It's decorum. Rey is doing the same thing. She has an objective here. She wants him to teach her about the Force. She wants him to return and aid the Resistance. She's being respectful in an effort to ingratiate herself. How does that not make sense in that context?

As far as Han, yeah, you'd expect she'd call him "Captain" but these are two very different scenarios.

 

Rian Johnson makes the longest Star Wars movie ever and cuts the leading characters' screen time in the process (it wouldn't surprise me if their line count was reduced as well but I don't know that.) Luke ends up being given way too much to do, ironically for an actor who actively disdained what he was doing (and a vocal part of the audience as well). There's too many characters in general in TLJ and it ends up being bloated by this lack of focus.

Padme grew up with a Jedi Order - and thus she would at least know it's his given title. Rey hasn't grown up around the same, she's not even aware that the Jedi and Sith were real things. How does she know what titles they used? Do they refer to Luke as Master Skywalker in TFA (I don't recall)? She doesn't refer to Kylo as Darth Kylo (as you'd expect because she wasn't aware of Sith and what their titles were). I'm just suggesting that the same might apply here. This isn't necessarily a "hill to die on" for me... just an observation about what I regard to be an inconsistency in dialogue.

 

Rey was looking for a mentor and you call a mentor Master. This has nothing to do with the Jedi and their ranks.

He's not a Sith, so she couldn't refer to him as Darth Kylo. But she refered to Vader as Darth Vader. Speaking of Kylo Ren. How does Rey know about Kylo Ren's name at the beginning of TLJ?

 

Any straw they can grasp at...

I'm still comming here because I feel comfortable among fellow fanboys who understand my feelings about this movie or the direction this trilogy or franchise is heading. It's greI don't have to argue or defend my point of view endless times..

I would be happy to explore further the Force, the Whills, the story would be more coherent for sure, and I can't imagine I would hate the maker's movies more then TLJ. I will continue to say that it was a big mistake not to use George for anything while he is still alive. He is a walking encyclopedia of Star Wars. I would pay him with gold to be involved as much as he would want to, find great screenwriters and directors and give them enough time to bring the best story possible, but always with the wisdom of the maker himself. I don't care if it makes 2 billions or not, that's not measure to me for deciding if I want to see the movie again and again for the rest of my life or 2 times in the theater and never again.

I had to think hard what are you talking about, and then I remembered someone explained to me some time ago that Rey downloaded all her powers from Kylo.....first I start to laugh but he assured me that no joking here so I was just amazed how that could someone invent and mean it seriously

Was she? She was send by Leia to find Luke, even the Falcon was not hers, she repeatedly said to Luke that the rebels needs him to fight against the empire, she was a messenger and I too didn't understand why she used "master"....then again not even Hamill knew why he wore sunday Jedi robes if disconnected and wanted the order to die...so what do we know, if the actors don't know

True, but that wasn't her firs line to "master" Skywalker. First two days she was just repeating her mantra about helping against the bad guys

 

You seriously gave me a 'Dislike' for a fact? Well, what a great discussion this was. Her intention was to get trained in the force and to get Luke back. So she needs a mentor aka a master. Furthermore she knows from Leia and Han that Luke trained young Jedi students, so this makes him a master. You don't need to be a genius to get that.
