What I hated about this movie:
    1. Star Wars is not supposed to be funny so enough with these childish Disney jokes
    2. 3/4 of this film is set in space? Seriously?
    3. 30 Years later we expect Luke to be this super being, as powerful as yoda, and while he may have been, we didn't get to see any of it. He came off very cowardly and then just dies in the end.
    4. Darth Plagueis? Nope...Snoke is a nobody. We were told to believe he is more powerful than Palpatine, but that is not even close to being the case.
    5. We still know nothing of Reys origins...
    6. Where the hell are the lightsaber duels? Bring back George Lucas please.
    7. Leia Kent or Leia Poppins. WTF was that all about...
    8. The Yoda cameo was a joke. His appearance was meaningless
    9. Why on earth would they bring back the Yoda puppet...CGI Yoda is clearly better looking. Do they hate the prequel trilogy that much?
    10. No Anakin Skywalker is extremely disappointing
    11. The most Frustrating thing about this movie is the possibilities were endless. There was so much potential and they could have literally done anything, but instead we get a boring space battle and lack of anything that made previous Star Wars movies great.

edit: forgot about BB-8 controlling the AT-ST. Literally shook my head at that part.

I didn't think I could hate a movie as much as TFA, but this comes close.

The LS to the head was a bad beat for me, it wasn't an issue of not understanding, it was an issue of it being out of place. Snoke could have demonstrated his Force superiority while maintaining tension in that scene. I can tolerate that she was out matched, Luke was with Sidious, Anakin was with Dookou, but it felt belittling and unnecessary for a laugh.

Also I think Snoke's early presence in this trilogy establishes a far different dynamic than our introduction to Vader in the OT (who was himself at a different stage when we first meet him than Kylo). We know far more about the Sith than we do about Snoke (virtually nothing). The parallels don't make for a compelling argument in a side by side comparison for the OT and ST in my opinion

Empire was as subversive a film as TLJ. The reveal epitomised it. It’s why it’s regarded as the best. TLJ was made in the same mould.

Both films nigh on reinvented the wheel, as you put it.

Erm, nobody dislikes humour. Only bad, try hard, copying other money making franchise "humour" that feels out of place, forced and takes you out of the film. And yeah, fleck sand, it's coarse, rough and it gets everywhere!

I loved even the prequels at one time. Rogue One was fantastic. TFA was even better.

I honestly don't know what they were thinking on this. The biggest issue that I have right now is that it feels like this should have been the movie at end of the trilogy. I don't have any hopes or expectations for any of the characters moving forward now. All the tension and intrigue is gone. TFA made me want to know what happens next. Now we are without a real villain, the hero has nothing else to learn, and the side characters have become flat.

Secondly, the pacing. They really tried to cram way too much into this. Most of the characters had their "are they good?" "are they bad?" moment. It was the theme I guess...I get that, but having multiple characters doing that when there are so many characters is just weird. Holdo, DJ, Ren, Luke. The Canto Bight stuff seemed very pointless and out of place. Luke kept changing his mind over and over it seemed. Rian said that the assembly cut was over 4 hours I think. They should have kept cutting.

Thirdly this movie had such awful 4th wall breaking quasi parody moments in it, not to mention some sexual innuendo thrown in (Maz's comment about the slicer). The iron?? Luke milking that thing, taking a sip, and winking at the camera? Luke tickling Rey's hand... What in the world? I can forgive the farting Eopi in the prequels because it was a level of silliness that still fit the rules of the saga somewhat. Since when is Luke a comedian? Making your villains overly funny sucks.

Characters: DJ was alright aside from his cringeworthy stuttering. I cant figure out a reason character/story wise that the stutter was necessary or added anything to him. Rose was completely bland. Finn was bland (and all this talk of him choosing sides didn't really play out). Snoke was more interesting this time around but was wasted in the end ("See guys! We are doing unexpected things!"). Yoda showing up didn't really need to happen (at least as far as what he actually said and did goes), but it was an alright moment. It should have been an AMAZING moment. :(

The force: Now apparently you can project yourself (and objects) anywhere, and that can kill you...I guess. A force user can now set up a conference call between 2 people. I understand the need to expand what can happen in SW, but these things surely could have been useful in the earlier movies if they were already possible, no?

Maybe all of this will grow on me as I watch. I will try to learn to like it like I did the prequels but I cant lie, there was a point where I thought they might have set a precedent that will ruin the future of the franchise for me. I don't know why they were so happy with this movie---so happy that they would offer Rian another trilogy...

There were things I liked. Just wanted that to be known.

No. The reasoning in this thread for not liking the film is largely laughable.

You know it's interesting that people the love/like the movie are visiting this thread and commenting. I thought this thread would actually help in 2 ways:

    1. That it might centralize most of the complaints about the movie so if you enjoyed it and were concerned that other people not liking it would affect your out look, you could avoid large swaths of the commentary
    2. For those who didn't enjoy the movie to compare and contrast what they didn't like to see where there was overlap and where there was divergence. I see a lot of people hated the Mary Poppins scene and I didn't. Conversely I hated the LS head knock with Rey, a lot of others didn't mind it.

What I do know is that there are a number of substantive complaints about the movie and no one is disputing their foundation. It's fine if they don't share the opinion, but I think it's important to realize that you can make a Star Wars movie, take risks, and they not work. And people can SAY they don't work. A LOT of this movie doesn't work for reasons that have NOTHING to do with shipping or fan boy tendencies.

I just wanted to share this video of Mark Hamill's interviews, he seems to have a much better grasp on Luke's character than the writers and it's really sad they did't pay more attention to his input.

I'd have to write incredibly huge article if I would want to describe everything that I disliked in TLJ, but at least in short some most obvious things:

    - Luke was handled really terribly, I'm with Mark Hamill on this one, I think this character was too big for RJ to handle properly in first place.

    - The plot was shallow and relied on too many shortcuts, plot devices and "luck" (certain events and their timing) and we didn't really get anywhere much in regards to the whole trilogy (that may improve once the following episode is released). It didn't even build effectively on what was setup in TFA. This one would really work better as a standalone movie.

    - The dialogues were shallow as well (and as I'm not native English speaker and usually watch films in the original English language with translated subtitles and generally I have to glance at these subtitles here and there, but in this film I didn't have to do it the entire time as majority of the dialogues were very simple one liners).

    - in many cases lobotomized humor

    - FO is absolutely incompetent military operation. Their general, commanders etc watch their ships being destroyed (or basically enemy performing some sort of activity) for quite some time before they finally start acting. Empire would crush them with half of that fleet (they're even worse than Empire in Rebels) and if they had someone like Vader at command he'd force choke half of them for their incompetence instantly. :D Their heavy cruiser Dreadnought could be pretty easily disarmed by single X-wing. Tractor beam doesn't exist anymore in this world it seems. And how about a hyperspace jump with part of the fleet to outrun the resistance and attack them from multiple sides or something else than just chase them for eternity?

    - Resistance didn't act much better in this regard either.

    - Classic choice of killing someone some complicated theatrical way that ends up the other way round instead of just killing them right away (Phasma vs Finn & Rose). This has been so much overused in the cinematography that it's been a terrible cliche for who knows how long.

    - Sometimes way too many things "luckily" happened at the right time so that we got the desired outcome of multiple events at the same time.

    - Where did the Canto Bight, located at the desert planet that looks almost like Tatooine from the outer space, get so much water (river, or even sea) from? Apparently they're so rich over there so that they can afford to build these and import the water from another planets. ;)

    - General Zod, uh Leia, flying through space was ridiculous even if we accept different physics of this world. At least make it happen quickly (right after she's thrown out) and work more on the visual part.

    - Strangely the worst CGI of the last SW movies can be seen here and I'm still wondering why (the best example being the Canto Bight fathier chase, or external shots of X-wings, Jedi temple caretakers, probably partly CGI Yoda (seemed to be puppet in some shots and CGI in others) wasn't also of the best work). Chroma keying (green screen) looks terribly in many scenes as well (for example Finn vs Phasma, Crait).

    - Film editing also looks problematic way too often, It seems they shot many more scenes and then were cutting them out which at least at some places affected the flow (and maybe the whole story was originally supposed to be slightly different). Still when doing such edits, many pointless scenes could've been cut to make the film shorter.

    - I didn't like how the Luke vs Kylo scene was approached, even though it was an interesting idea it looked too much Western-like and didn't fit in there from this perspective. They could actually give Luke some nice cowboy hat while they were at it. I bet Dave Filoni would happily lend them some. :D

    1) Portrayal of Luke Skywalker.
Luke's character was not shown appropriately. Luke was not Luke in TLJ. Rian Johnson did a terrible job writing his character.
Luke saw darkness before. He fought it. He knew that there’s always hope. He believed in his father, his father turned to light. I’m not buying the whole “I saw darkness in Ben, I got scared, I decided to kill him” thing. He went into the force cave on Dagobah, he saw himself in the helmet of Vader, he knew there could be darkness in himself, he did not got scared then, he decided to fight that darkness, he decided to save his friends. That’s what Luke does. That’s what Luke is.

Disney Luke’s portrayal is just wrong. I don’t want to sound like a butt hurt fanboy, but maybe they should’ve hired a director that has actually seen the OT, who understands the core characteristics of SW heroes. Also, Darth Vader is a complex character himself. He’s not the embodiment of darkness. He was tricked into the dark side, he is a human being, when Vader sees his son being hurt, he sees how strong Luke’s character is, how he’s not letting the dark side seduce him, Vader holds on to that light, he switches sides and does what is the right thing to do. By showing us in TLJ that Ben Solo is drawn to the dark side just because he's related to Vader, Disney shows us the lack of understanding of the depth of Vader’s character. Vader died as a Jedi, dare I say. He was buried as a Jedi, which means that the light has prevailed in him. Darkness did not consume Luke even though he was a direct descendant of Vader. Why would it consume Ben Solo then? The only way for that to happen was if Snoke TRICKED Ben Solo into the dark side. But even in that scenario Luke would’ve fought for his nephew. He wouldn’t have let Snoke win. He would have fought for what is dear to him, just because he’s Luke, he’s a Jedi, he’s a new hope.

Whoever says TLJ is “just as good as TESB”, whoever says that it’s a masterpiece, a 10/10 movie does not understand Star Wars at all. I know that I sound like butt hurt fan again. But it’s just the way things are. This movie has ruined the sequel trilogy for me and I feel bad for Mark Hamill for having starred in it. He knows Luke and he understands how wrong was Luke written to be in The Last Jedi.

The Force Awakens actually did a pretty good job establishing Luke. He let Ben down, he let Han and Leia down. He let his masters down, since his new academy failed, too. He went into exile. We don't know why exactly, but we know that he's been travelling across the galaxy looking for jedi temples. What could be in those temples? I guess, knowledge. He sought that knowledge, he had to become stronger in the force, so that he could make up for his mistakes and defeat Snoke, a mysterious powerful dark sider who manipulated Luke's nephew to join the dark side, who made Luke fail. I think JJ, or should I say the screenwriters succeeded in writing a decent Luke's backstory for TLJ.

Too bad, Rian Johnson did not use an opportunity TFA gave him.

    2) Snoke.
Snoke's death was probably the worst thing in the movie for me. Don't get me wrong, the way Kylo kills him is kind of cool, but it comes out of nowhere. I guess Rian was going for an unexpected twist to make the audience wow, but when you kill off a character without giving any backstory of his, the actual reaction would be like "oh, he killed him, whatever". Snoke was supposed to die in IX. TLJ should've given us his intentions and backstory, it should've revealed how powerful he was and it actulally did, but he's dead now, so who cares, and don't throw your garbage theories at me. If a character dies on screen, without any, maybe even subtle indication of the opposite, it means that the character is dead. TFA has shown us that his main mission was to find and kill Luke. Because Luke is the last jedi, because he's a threat to Snoke. But TLJ doesn't give a sh*t of what's been established in TFA. There's ACTUALLY nothing about Snoke wanting to find and kill Luke anymore. Rian Johnson not only hasn't seen the OT, he must have skipped TFA as well.

    3) Finn and Rose adventure.
Pointless, boring, serves to establish lame relationship, does not affect the story. Will not go into details, use common sense.

    4) SuperLeia.
New force powers are cool. Kylo Ren stopping the blaster projectile in TFA and making Poe freeze was cool. Leia flying in vacuum is not cool. It's just too much.

    5) First order/resistance chase plot.
What a lame plot that was. It was like I was watching Mad Max Fury Road all over again. But if Mad Max compensates for a simple plot with beautiful visuals and action, TLJ compensates for its simple plot with a sh*tty out of place interaction between Poe and Holdo.

    6) Rey's role in the movie.
So, what does exactly Rey do in the movie? She, just like Rian 'The visionary' Johnson, ignores what happened in TFA. She's force sensitive, she defeated Kylo Ren, she's found Luke, she needs a teacher and she needs Luke to help the resistance fight the first order. She has seen Kylo kill his own father, the man who basically became a father figure to her. And what happens? SHE BONDS WITH KYLO REN. F*ck off, Rian Johnson. Just f*ck off, mate.

    7) Rey's parentage.
So, being no one can be a good thing. But it has to mean something. Like in TFA, when Kylo Ren force pulls the Skywalker saber, but it flies into Rey's hand, a no ones hand, making us feel like it's just the will of the force to be on her side now. Rey being no one can also help develop Kylo Ren's character. For example, he sees Luke training Rey, he sees Rey becoming good with the force, he sees Rey becoming more powerful than Kylo Ren, a descendant of Darth Vader himself is. He gets envious, greedy for power, angry, unstable because of that. He feels like Luke betrayed him, like Luke betrayed the Skywalker heritage by giving his ultimate knowlege of the force to that 'No one' and not Kylo Ren.

TFA left Rey parentage mystery unanswered, which again could result in an interesting revelation in TLJ. She could have been Rey Skywalker after all. There were ways of making it real. Let's have a simple one. Luke HAD a wife, and a kid. Because he learnt the way the old jedi order failed, he reformed the jedi code to make it more humane. When Kylo Ren, seduced by the dark side and Snoke (AND NOT BECAUSE LUKE WANTS TO KILL BEN SOLO, I'm looking at you Rian Johnson) betrays Luke, the only thing Luke and his wife want is to protect their child. Before the ultimate fight at the academy happens, where Luke's wife and Luke himself (presumably) die (turns out that Luke survived after all) , they send her to an outer planet where an old friend would have looked after her. But that friend of theirs dies shortly after their daughter arrives. She is left alone and she has to scavenge to stay alive. But because she's strong with the force, she manages to do so.
See, it's not that difficult to write something buyable with the Skywalker bloodline. I came up with it like in two minutes.

    8) BB-8 the new Jar Jar.
Kicks guards' as*es with coins, pilots a AT-ST (or whatever they call it in the first order). The real Mary Sue. Someone, please kill this 'toy factory' droid already.

    9) Knights of Ren.
Where are they? Who are they? Are they the new sith? SHOW US THE KNIGHTS OF REN OR EXPLAIN WHO THEY ARE.
Once again, TFA establishes someting interesting. Snoke literally calls Kylo the master of Knights of Ren. But TLJ and Rian once again sh*t on TFA's establishment. What could have been and interesting part of the plot, became nothing.

    10) Battle of Crait
What the hell was that supposed to be? Why do the rebels (sorry, the resistors) send outated ships which can do no harm to the walkers, and which they literally have just found at the base, into the fight? Why do they even choose to fight? There are like 40 of them left. All they can do is to stay alive and protect each other. Close the gate, barricade it, and wait for you savior, Luke Skywalker, ffs.

TL;DR: Sh*t movie, Screw Rian Johnson, screw Disney for allowing TLJ to happen. The sequels are no longer canon for me personally. I might even end up not seeing IX. I've seen TLJ two days ago and I still can't wash off the frustration the movie left me in.

Just saw it again, you're right that LS hit was kind of wonky weird.

I loved TFA (Its my Avatar) so I’m not a Disney/Kathleen Kennedy/Sequel Trilogy hater. This movie was an utter embarrassment and train wreck is putting it nicely! I’m in disbelief at how bad it was as I was expecting it to be atleast as good as TFA.

    Dear Rian Johnson,

The Trilogy is about Rey/Kylo Ren along with Luke and Snoke, but they were all relegated to secondary roles to the bloated plot line with Fin/Rose/Poe vs Hux story. 2 1/2 hours for that????

That story should have been background music to the Rey/Luke/Kylo/Snoke story. But everytime it build up any type of drama, it cut to Finn/Rose.

I could go on and on but I’m too mad right now as I honestly could care less about Episode 9. Any reviewer who said this is on par with ANH or ESB needs their reviewer card taken away, as this movie was abysmal.

This was one of my biggest problems with the movie.would have been so much better had Luke just sadly let I️t drop to the ground.

I don't know how the franchise can recover for me. I'm kinda just hoping for some good standalone movies from here on out. Maybe JJ can pull off another good sequel somehow that enables me to kind of forget this movie. It was just so bad and there isn't any fixing it now. I can see a LOT of fan edits coming out for this.

I really hope I can learn to love it over time.
