You know....Whether it meant for her to sound like she was supposed to whine...it was the good kind. Lols. And I thought she sounded cute...

I like her line "not any of your business that's why!" Or whatever it was. Still good because of the way she delivered the line. :p. What a tease.

And you haven't given a halfway decent response to anything I've posted here, what's your point?

I just don't see you really adding anything to the discussion here, what does the novelization version of the scene between Kylo and Snoke talking about Rey have to do about this topic? I fail to see how this hints at anything involving Rey's origins other than the fact that for some reason Rey has memories of the planet she later finds Luke on and Kylo knows this but he doesn't tell Snoke about it.

I'm glad you posted this. I'm confused at why you can't see the glaringly obvious part where Maz differentiates Rey's parents with Luke during her wise counsel:

Rey: What was that? I shouldn't have gone in there.
Maz: That lightsaber it belonged to Luke and his father before him and now, it calls to you!
Rey: I have to get back to Jakku.
Maz: Han told me. Dear child I see your eyes, you already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku they're never coming back. But, there's someone who still could.
    Rey: Luke.
Maz: The belonging you seek is not behind you, it is ahead. I am no Jedi, but I know the force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing. Close your eyes, feel it. The light. It's always been there, it will guide you. The saber, take it!
Rey: I'm never touching that thing again, I don't want any part of this!

The highlighted and underlined dialogue CLEARLY shows that Maz is separating Luke from Rey's parents. She clearly tells Rey that her family are not coming back - and Rey cries. She then says BUT...BUT there is someone who could. Then Rey says: Luke. Acknowledging that her family is indeed long gone but that she understands that her future lies with Luke because everything is leading her towards being his pupil.

i'll just throw this question out to everybody because i'm really curious now:

if Rey is Luke's daughter, do you think Ren knows it?
if you think he does, why does he offer to train her?

we know he doesn't want to kill her. and we know Snoke said to bring her to him (and from the book we know that Snoke doesn't just want to play patty cake with her).
~ though if you disagree on those things, say so.

so then what's Ren after in this scene? what does he think is going to happen to Rey if she acquiesces?
    Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 3.06.05 PM.png

what's going on in crazyboy's head right here?

maybe @Ammianus Marcellinus or @timonder could help out. i'm trying to understand the end-game of this from the Rey Skywalker perspective.

If Ren found out Rey was Luke's daughter he would've done so when he was in her head. And if he took these thoughts from her head then Rey too must know Luke is her father! But Rey believes Luke to be a myth! (Ren also refers to her as just a scavenger to Snoke. Neither of them think she is Luke's.)

Oh but what if is she just doesn't know his name but knows his face and this is what Ren sees? Well then why the hell doesn't Ren say anything? I mean he chucks her against and tree then tries to cut her down - why not say there and then: You're Luke's daughter and I will kill you as I will him!" or something equally as stupid!

Han doesn't know who Rey is. Maz ask's him and then afterwards she talks to Rey and separates Rey's parents from Luke.
Leia doesn't know else she would've been more concerned about Rey being a hostage on Starkiller (which also shows Han didn't know and pass it on) and we are to then believe that she doesn't say anything to Rey later on?

Kylo might know who Rey is. In fact I think he does. I think he likely has a connection with her parents or know who her parents might be. But he doesn't know she is Luke's daughter. There is no reason for him to hide that fact from her. In fact, he could likely help push her into the Dark Side if he told her - "That guy you're looking for - Luke, yeah he's your father and he abandoned you on a desert world".

Wow...this thread is heating up more than I thought it would.

Do you think rey will become stubborn in some way? Where she may not agree to an extent of let's say Luke says this and rey thinks otherwise? Like say if he points out a few flaws in her and she refuses to admit it...and how it could lead to danger of walking down the path his father ended up on the wrong place. Luke would fear that she'll be tempted by the dark side due to not only being reminded by how anakin was tempted but also not being able to control her own thoughts and emotions that could potentially betray her and those around her.

I dunno but I like to see her 'aggressive' side here and there and how it would affect her when she is conflicted about a situation. Then we'll get to see a different side of her but in the end, she'll somehow pull through and come to understand what has to be done and how to go about doing it with or without luke's and or anyone’s involvement.

I like daisy alot and I think she has the kind of range where we see both of her light and dark side.

Please forgive my grammar...if this post doesn't have any sense to it or to Rey as a character. I think her flirting with the dark side here and there would be very intriguing to watch. Hey just because both anakin and Luke were tempted by the darkness (although the father fell hard by palpatines seduction whereas the son only had a taste of it but renounced the temptation to join the emperor who wanted him to replace Vader at his side) doesn't mean Rey can't be tempted. I don't mind if she comes of as...a pain in my ass but it could be interesting in a way of how it could go down from her own perspective.

If well written with creative minds and effective on screen...maybe we'll see rey differently depending on our own views.

*shrugs* it wouldn't necessarily need a redemption arc but I dunno . I just think things could go in a different direction if done right with the right mindset in making it believable so we get where she is coming from.

what if he only just realized it when she grabbed the light saber and not in the interrogation room? does that make a difference? (totally playing devil's advocate here).

and ooo ~ say more about what he might know about her parents. do you have a theory?

i have to say the whole "no reason to hide the fact" is all the nails in the coffin for me (with Han, Leia, Maz, whomever).

Well, I just think if he's in her head earlier he's more likely to learn stuff then when she is in full Force mode and stronger than before...BUT, let's say he has a new connection with her then, sees that Luke is her father - again, bloody well tell her Kylo! Do what Vader did to Luke - "Obi Wan lied, I am your father!". But telling Rey she is Luke's daughter but that he abandoned her, he right away will take away Rey's loyalty to finding Luke and maybe steer her towards the dark side. But then, even when Rey beats him down and is likely about to kill him, he says nothing.

There was an old rumour that Rey's parents were part of the clan that were destroyed by the KoR (using Luke's saber). It's impossible for me to be exact but I think there could be truth in this. I think something will link Rey's parents to Luke's saber and/or the map to Luke.

Indeed. If they knew but we never hear the conversation, either with Rey or with each other about Rey then it's a terrible piece of script writing. It's a massive cop out to dodge those scenes because they will give away the big reveal. Nah, they don't know - because she isn't!

yeah, this is a very intriguing thing i hadn't even considered before. if he knows they're cousins, why wouldn't he say so? hey Rey: we're blood. you belong with me. like you said, especially when she could lop his head off: whoa whoa whoa! i'm your cousin Ben! hahaha

this takes us back to the vision. and maybe even him ditching her on Jakku (though i've largely given that one up). but ~ he still could have spared her (and her mother in that moment?). grapsing. but it doesn't change the fact that the vision could be the murder of her family. interesting.

    couldn't agree more.

Kylo realizes who she is at that particular moment in the duel namely that she is "the girl". If she is 'the girl' Skywalker than what better way than to turn Luke's own daughter into a weapon against him. Kylo knows his own potential of being a Skywalker and knows what it takes to turn and train Rey into the suitable weapon which he needs either for his own ambition (perhaps overthrowing Snoke mirroring Vader wishing to overthrow Palpatine - his example Vader's ultimate goal) or as a weapon against Luke and Leia. He intends to invert Yoda and Obi Wan's strategy to overthrow the emperor and defeat Darth Vader. Their choice was to train the son in order to redeem and overthrow his father. Kylo wants to do something similar, he wants to make up for Vader's mistake by now turning the daughter against her father Luke. Luke "won't fight" family. It's his strength but also his weakness: attachment

Another (additional) possibility is that Kylo himself thinks he can learn from Rey. She had already blocked him out during his mindprobe and he did "feel it too". Besides, Kylo is being held back by his compassion, he feels the pull of the light. He wants to spare his opponent, particularly so because it is his own relative. He severed the bond with his father, wishes to break off his connection to his uncle, but he does with to reconnect to his niece/sister simply because he thinks she is 'impressionable'. There might even be some history behind the two of them, something only Ben knows.

Whether Rey acquiesces is of course a big 'what if'. The hope itself is a product of Kylo's misinterpretation of Rey's emotional state and character. First of all, the 'good' morality of her character prevents her from making that choice at that particular moment: it goes against her moral grain to acquiesce. But more importantly, for Rey, ascuiescing would mean that she would have to reveal the location of Luke and also giving herself over to a person who attacked her friends and family and who had tortured and imprisoned her. Revealing Luke's location means she would risk that the one lifeline to her parents and true belonging becomes severed. She wishes to avoid that at all cost. She will give her life to protect her true identity and that of her parents. "Big secret". She knows that if people find out that she is a Skywalker it can be used against her and her family and will ultimately put her at risk. It is something that the person who dropped her off advised her to do: "never tell them where you're from". Uncle Owen and Obi Wan never revealed the true identities of Luke and Leia for similar reasons. Their true identity puts them at risk. Their identities are hidden from them. But this time it is Rey herself who shields her true identity from others.

I think Ben does not really know what Snoke intends to do with her. A powerful teacher like Snoke keeps her knowledge privileged and doles it out and portions it out whenever it is in his own best interest ("time to complete his training").

But seriously, I don't know the particular endgame, or what goes on in Kylo's mind. I can deduce things on the basis of what I've seen in the movie and the story and can hypothesize about it but nothing more really.

I will ignore it because I've already answered all of this. Someone here just isn't even reading my posts. Sorry to burst your bubble but whatever your reaching for here doesn't add anything to the discussion of who Rey's family is and obviously that is entirely your intention. You're not interested in discussing ideas here you're interested in shutting out any discussion that doesn't fit with what you think.

You people live in your own little world, I'm sorry to be so rude but as a matter of fact the best films and the best kind of screenwriting is when you show don't tell. If it has to be telegraphed to your audience for them to get it you have utterly failed to use the strengths of this format to tell your story. Not that The Force Awakens is any kind of revelation in terms of screenwriting, but for what they were working with they did quite well, and what you're suggesting is exactly what you DO NOT DO.

This is the level of disconnect I'm talking about here, if I were arguing your side of how to tell a good story on film I would have been flunked out of film school. Sorry but you simply don't know what you're talking about. I'll give you that Rey very well might not end up being Luke's daughter, but it is not at all for any of the reasons stated here. When you have to spell it out to your audience in long expository dialogue you're doing it completely wrong, period.

TL;DR if your issue with the idea that Rey is Luke's daughter is that nobody said anything you do not know the first thing about screenwriting or how films even communicate a story to an audience.

If you're going to ask if they knew why didn't they say so, you also have to ask the question "Why would they?" Where was there a particular part of the story where it would have been appropriate for any character to stop whatever they're doing and have a long discussion with Rey about her parents? Seriously people, get real. If there's no drama or action to follow along with the dialogue, you're doing it wrong.

There are some devices that can be used to get around this, like if you have a narrator or something, but the aim is always to leave exposition to the bare minimum required and tell the details as they should naturally come out in the story.

What were they going to do? Just have Kylo Ren suddenly and inexplicably tell Rey that Luke is her father? What would that accomplish? Why would Kylo Ren want to tell her?

The movie isn't worried about whether or not you know who Rey's parents are, that's not the goal of any good story to just telegraph the information to you, if you do that you have no story, and leastwise not a particularly good story that is keeping your audience engaged and guessing and paying pay off on all the pieces you're setting up. You don't just give all the secrets away. The movie isn't worried about if you're wondering about if Kylo Ren knew, why didn't he tell her? If the screenwriters did their job right those are exactly the kind of questions you should be asking.

I have no problem with alternative theories, I have plenty of problems with people who act like they know everything but honestly don't know the first thing about the subject they're talking about.

so why do you think he doesn't say something when she's about to kill him? why doesn't he use what he knows against her?

sorry if the question was vague. it's not what does Rey think is going to happen if she acquieses, it's what does Ren think will happen. if she says: yes! teach me! what's he going to do with her? take her to Snoke and say: look what i found?

but we do know. from the book. Snoke is mad because Ren failed to get the map due to his compassion. Snoke wants to gives Ren a "reminder" of the Darkside. i feel like it's a pretty heavy indication that he intends to torture Rey or force Ren to torture her himself. if Ren brings Rey to Snoke, is he then going to argue to make her a pupil? how does this not reinforce Ren's compassion and outrage Snoke?

and totally understanding that we're just speculating. all this makes sense from the perspective of her not being a Skywalker, so i'm just curious about the added level of complexity if she is.

I disagree that Rey knows where she is from. I think due to the traumatic events of her childhood she's mentally blocked out most of her past and she sort of goes head first into this adventure with Finn having no idea what it's going to open her up to. I also doubt the idea that any friendly character left her in the care of Unkar Plutt, but otherwise very well put. There's clearly a lot more going on here than the sort of mechanical way of thinking some people seem driven to here.

I think Kylo Ren has delusions of grandeur, he sees himself as the heir apparent to Darth Vader but he's never faced a real challenge and he doesn't know (or does not accept) the real truth about his family and how much of a disappointment he is to them all, and then suddenly he meets this girl, this scavenger who bests him and claims that lightsaber he believes belongs to him, for herself. All the more reason for him to come back as a much stronger villain with more purpose than he had before next time around. He's made his choice to follow the path of the Dark Side and now he has to try all the more harder to prove himself as the rightful heir to his family legacy, which previously hadn't been challenged

That snark might work in some places where people care at all about how many times you've had these discussions, but when the only rhetoric you can offer is something as utterly banal as "Well if they knew why didn't they just turn to the audience and telegraph the whole thing?" I really wonder how much of this discussion was worth getting into. I mean y'all just keep saying nonsense like "Maz specifically separates Luke from Rey's family". It's not even in the realm of accurate. It's flat out wrong.

So much for all your thoughtful discussion man. I can understand now why most threads around here are just the same people patting eachother on the back. lolz

Well you can make a statement to either sides. Here is some food for thought to why Rey might/might not be a skywalker.

-She taught the Jedis/Luke/sith was a myth/legend. So someone had to tell her these stories when she was younger.
-When she is attracted to the lightsaber(anakin/luke) the voice she hears are voice of only jedis that anakin/luke encountered.
-Mind trick scene: only Luke would of told her that story to have her do it to a trooper.(i was bit like WTF when she did it but thinking of it during my second showing she was told about it.)
-when she takes the lightsaber from Kylo is not only that it mean she is strong but it called to her so she is meant to have it for TFA.
    - Rey/Leia scene: why would she not consult with chewie. she went directly to Rey and it just seem calm and that everything was right feeling(force) with them.
-Rey gets left on Jakku while Luke just leaves and they cant find him. then they find each other or Rey finds him.

May the force be with you always...

As for Rey knowing about the Jedi and other locations on Jakku:

REY: [comments on Survival Guide illustration that looks like Lor San Tekka's Sacred Village] "One of the Sacred Villages. The place gave me the creeps."

REY: "I've been out to the Sacred Villages a couple of times, carrying messages from Unkar, but I've never been asked to stay."

REY: "One [Sacred] village believes in the Force and the legends of the old Jedi sorcerers." "...that sounds crazy"

    From Rey's Survival Guide

havent read that but thanks for the addition. either way you can take what TFA has given and make it to where she can or isnt. I feel like as she got left and hearing about the village and the force and she saying Jedi sorcerers she didnt want to believe it like she dint want any part of the lightsaber and wanted to leave. she knew that throughout the movie she had to move foward cause of the lightsaber. I would like to see if she is lukes daughter but if she isnt then im cool with that.

May the force be with you always...
