Of course it is about Vader. I agree! But that's why it is about Kylo too. We heard Vader breathing, but we also know that Kylo worships the helmet that has produced that breathing.
For the moment, Kylo/Ben Solo is the only one who is a direct descendant of Anakin Skywalker/Vader. We have already seen that Kylo actively seeks Vader and "consults" his melted helmet. The saber is a Skywalker legacy, and it's an interesting legacy as that is both Anakin's weapon as a jedi, but also is the weapon with which he turned to the dark side (we should remember that that same weapon has killed children!). That same weapon is the link as well to Obi-Wan who defeated Anakin and took it from him on Mustafar to give 19 years later to Luke as his inheritance.
We are of course all speculating at this point Until Rey's parentage is revealed and we find out why is she involved with the Skywalkers all this can be interpreted many ways, and I'm sure that in retrospect we will see things differently.
My personal speculation is that Anakin's blue lightsaber is symbolic as it is the link that tied Anakin to Luke to Kylo.
(I'm working under the hypothesis that Rey is a Kenobi, so my interpretations are tied with that...)
Kylo said "That weapon, it belongs to me" because he believes it to be so, and according from early leaked storyboards Maz stole it from him.
It came to Rey when they both beckoned for it because Kylo is not currently worthy of having it.
Anakin last used the weapon in his duel with Obi-Wan on Mustafar, Luke lost the weapon in his duel with Vader on Bespin (that's why Bespin is in the vision), the next person that weapon belonged was Kylo. (Even the new VR Trials on Tatooine which is technically not 100% canon, but is made with association with the sory group, for some reason has that lightsaber used by Ben Solo!) Kylo in a way loses the weapon to Rey on Starkiller Base.

The duel on Starkiller Base (snow and ice) between Kylo and Rey has a striking visual parallel with Anakin and Obi-Wan's duel on Mustafar (lava and fire).

For the time being, I like to believe that there is a strong possibility of Rey is a Kenobi angle. In this way Kylo's legacy is as a Skywalker and Rey's legacy is as a Kenobi and their destinies as the descendants of Skywalker and Kenobi will be entwined again.
I like this symmetry. To me it has a great potential of being profoundly satisfying and tying all 9 movies of the saga together.

I see no real conflict if Rey is Luke's daughter. It has zero complexity or interest IMO. If Rey and Kylo were related, it would be much more impactful and powerful if she was his sister. Cousin? not at all...
I was convinced they are siblings before I saw the movie, but then, after I did, I no longer thought they were...

But for the time being, we all have our theories and speculate. That's the fun, isn't it?

After listening to it a few times, it's Palpatine for certain from RotS in there. Wow. I like the idea of her not being a Skywalker and taken in by them. Not really worrying right now who she is or where she comes from.

This is the key factor to me. I think it's important to remember that Star Wars, despite the scientific trappings, is fundamentally a fantasy series. Lineage often plays an important role in these kinds of stories, and Norse sagas (and we refer to Star Wars as a saga) were often a series of tales about multiple generations of the same family, with each generation continuing the family quest and cleaning up the previous generation's messes.

So what do I mean that it's important that the lightsaber chose Rey because she was worthier than Kylo? Let's look at the history of Anakin's lightsaber: it originally belonged to Anakin, but after Anakin betrayed the Jedi and turned to the Sith, he lost it at the conclusion of the Mustafar duel. It then passed into the possession of Obi-wan, who had stayed faithful to the Jedi and, in a sense, had personally judged Anakin as unworthy of the title of "Jedi." But Obi-wan never uses Anakin's lightsaber himself, he just kept it in anticipation of the day that Anakin's son Luke would prove worthy to inherit his father's role as a Jedi Knight.

Luke takes up his father's lightsaber (far more willingly that Rey does, but that's a conversation for another time), and even wields it against his father on more than one occasion. In their first encounter, which comes up in the Marvel comic, Vader immediately recognizes the lightsaber. He almost spills the beans right then and there out of shear surprise. During the Bespin duel, Vader passes judgment on Luke: "You are my son, and if I am unworthy to be called a Jedi Knight, so are you; but as my son, you shall follow in my footsteps and become Sith." Luke rejects this judgment by risking death to get away from Vader, continuing his training as a Jedi (constructing his own lightsaber to establish himself as his own person, free from his father's expectations), and by refusing to kill his father.

In refusing to kill Vader, Luke proves himself worthy to be a Jedi Knight ("I am a Jedi..."), and then as a Jedi Knight, forgives his father and restores his position as a Jedi Knight ("... like my father before me."). This prompts Vader to lash out against Palpatine and return to the Light Side.

Which brings us to Finn, Maz, and Kylo. Kylo believes that Anakin's lightsaber belongs to him because he believes that the true Skywalker legacy is that of Darth Vader, the Sith Lord. But the lightsaber is the weapon of Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight. It does not pass to him because the weapon represents a legacy that Kylo has worked for years to reject, and so it rejects him. Maz is a Force-user, but she acknowledges that she is not an inheritor of the legacy the Skywalker saber represents. Finn actually does wield the Skywalker saber, but he doesn't fare well when he does- it may well be his destiny to become a Jedi, but even if it is, the Skywalker saber isn't his; like Obi-wan and Maz, he was a custodian of the lightsaber, holding on for it for somebody else and forced to use it because he's in a "when all you have is a hammer" situation.

And then there's Rey. She receives a vision when she touches the Skysaber- Finn doesn't seem to receive any vision when Maz hands it to him. When Rey demands that Maz explain the Skysaber, Maz names Anakin and Luke as its previous owners- she doesn't include Obi-wan or herself in the list. When Maz says that it was Anakin's lightsaber and then Luke's, she isn't implying a direct passing of ownership, she's referencing the legacy the lightsaber represents: the destiny of the Skywalkers as Jedi Knights. By saying that the Skysaber has passed to Rey, she affirms her as an heir to its legacy, and thus the legacy of the Skywalkers itself. The lightsaber passes from Skywalker to Skywalker.

TL;DR version: Anakin's lightsaber confirms the wielder as a successor to the Skywalkers' legacy as Jedi Knights. When Rey took up the lightsaber, it essentially confirmed her as a descendent of Anakin Skywalker worthy to follow in his footsteps as a Jedi Knight.

I agree with everything you said (and very well said indeed!) and yet I still think (want to believe?) that the blood descendant is Kylo. Rey could be a descendant of the legacy, not necessarily of the bloodline.

But I'm speculating, and so are you, which is fun and well. We shall see.

Why thank you! :) I suppose Rey as a Kenobi is possible, and it does have a certain poetry to it. And there is 19 years for Obi-wan to develop an attachment to somebody. But if Rey's a Skywalker, than I think the conflict is that Kylo and Rey are trying to prove which legacy of the Skywalkers is the true one: Light Side, or Dark Side?

Very glad to hear that you allow for the Rey being a Kenobi possibility. (yoda 2)
I'm sure it could be a very satisfying thing for the trilogy and importantly for all the saga. As I said, we shall see. In the meantime - we shall speculate! ;)

i still think here's room to interpret this more broadly.

like you said, the saber is Anakin's and Obi-Wan becomes the holder of it for its future rightful owner.
Obi-Wan is now telling Rey to take her own first steps through the saber as a conduit.
if part of Rey's destiny is to help rescue Ben Solo from Kylo Ren, then, in effect, she too may be a holder in preparation for its future owner.

if Rey becomes a Jedi (and isn't a Skywalker), she'll make her own saber (why would she keep it if it belongs in the family?).
Ren Ben is the only person who actually wants the bloody thing. but he absolutely doesn't deserve it.

if Rey is a Kenobi, it still technically doesn't belong to her.
if Rey is a Skywalker, then yes, she has a claim on it.

That's true. Obi-wan could be urging Rey to redeem Ben and keep the lightsaber until he's ready for it.

I'll be more confident one way or the other when VIII comes out. It'll depend on whether she makes a new lightsaber or not. If she keeps the Skysaber or incorporates it as part of a novel design, I'll stick with my prediction that she's Luke's daughter. But if she creates a completely new lightsaber, I'll start backing off on that one.

She will probably keep the saber for VIII as technically you need to be advanced and already a jedi to be able to make your own. She has just began learning so she possibly can't still make her own lightsaber. (Luke made his in the beginning of VI - deleted scene) My prediction is that she will make her own lightsaber either at the end of VIII or in IX and its design will have something to do with her staff...;)
At the end of IX Kylo will receive back the blue one...maybe.

man i hope they resolve the question early in viii ~ i'm tried of playing the "who's Rey?" game ~ argh!
regardless of whether she's Luke's, i'm convinced part of her destiny is to rescue Ben and that he'll end up with it in the end, regardless.
like i said, he's the only one who wants it and has a connection to it that's personal.
and anyway Rey would look way more awesome with a shiny new double-bladed saber ~ hahaha

I see her as a double-bladed lightsaber kind of gal, myself. Or maybe she creates some sort of lightspear.

Those are your Reylo feelings that are making you believe that Kylo is the only blood descendant.

    Thank you, @LexPrime!

@Obi-Wan Solo, this seems familiar. Where have I seen this before? A angry young man associated with black and red who tries to act all suave and seductive to a young woman he's captured to try and extract information from her.

This is not the correct thread for this conversation, so let's finish it with this, but since you opened it up, where have we seen a dark, angry beast who is under a dark magical spell and falls for the beauty, taking her prisoner and deludedly thinking she is his guest, o, right, there it is. :p

The Beauty and the Beast motif makes sense. It follows traditional story motifs. Not always a romantic story. I have been looking at the VII in regards to how it fits into traditional story motifs and that certainly comes up as a possibility.

Getting back to the vision: has anybody considered that the bit where the Knights of Ren are standing in the rain surrounded by bodies is from Luke's perspective? It seems like a lot of the vision features things from Luke's memory. The corridor is a call back to Cloud City, Luke is kneeling next to R2. Maybe this was the moment when Luke tried to confront his nephew?

While this is a good theory, but I'm not sure of the timeline. The scene in the rain is not likely from the "academy massacre". It does not seem that from the narrative of TFA waited to go into exile after the academy fell. In order for this to be deform Luke's perspective he would have had to confront Kylo some time later. Also Rey sees her future confrontation with Kylo which as we know is not from Luke's perspective.
